Licensing Guide

How to Get a GKIDS Movie License

GKIDS distributes animated films, including the Studio Ghibli library in North America. Read the Ghibli rule below before you pick a title.

Studio Ghibli films have a format rule. GKIDS only allows Ghibli titles to be shown from a cinema digital file (DCP) or 35mm film. Blu-ray and DVD showings are allowed only at public libraries and universities. For a park, school, church, HOA or business movie night, pick a different film. Ghibli titles also have blackout dates, listed on GKIDS’s booking forms.

Which Form to Use

Step by Step

How to Apply Yourself

1

Pick Your Movie

Check the Ghibli rule above first, then choose a title and a backup.

2

Send a Booking Request

Use the non-theatrical form (opens in a new tab) or the general bookings form (opens in a new tab), whichever fits your event.

3

Wait for Confirmation

A request isn’t a booking until GKIDS confirms it.

4

Pay Before the Show

First-time customers pay before the screening date or the rights are revoked. Check is preferred. Card payments go through GKIDS by phone at 212-528-0500 ext. 113.

GKIDS doesn’t publish a lead time. If GKIDS is sending you a copy, it ships 2 to 3 weeks before the screening, so ask well before that.

Rules Worth Knowing

  • Any public showing of a GKIDS film needs a license.
  • Studio Ghibli: DCP or 35mm only, except at libraries and universities, and check the blackout dates on the form.
  • Non-theatrical bookings: you supply your own Blu-ray or DVD.
  • First-time customers pay before the screening date.

GKIDS doesn’t publish prices. The quote depends on attendance, free or paid admission, and format. Checked against GKIDS’s own website on September 25, 2026. Policies change, so confirm the details with GKIDS when you apply.
