What Time Should a Fall Outdoor Movie Start? Sunset Times Explained

The right fall outdoor movie start time depends on one thing: when it actually gets dark. A projector can’t compete with daylight, and in the fall the sunset moves earlier every week, so a start time that worked in September will be off by October.

How fast sunset moves in the fall

Around Albany and the Capital Region, sunset lands at roughly 6:40pm in early October. By late October it’s closer to 6pm. Then clocks fall back on November 1, 2026, and sunset jumps to around 4:40pm. These are approximate, and your exact spot will vary a few minutes, but the pattern holds: every week you wait, the night starts earlier.

Sunset isn’t showtime

The sky stays bright for a while after the sun drops. For a clear, sharp picture outdoors, you usually want to wait roughly 20 to 30 minutes after sunset before rolling the movie. Start too early and the first scenes look washed out, which is a rough way to open the night.

So for an early October event, a start around 7:10pm is a reasonable target. Late in the month, think 6:30pm. After the time change, you could start before 5:30pm, which opens the door to a younger crowd on a school night.

Fill the gap with a pre-show

People tend to arrive before it’s dark, and that’s fine. Use the time. Play music, open the concession stand, run a slideshow with sponsor logos or event announcements, or hold a costume contest in front of the screen. A 20 to 30 minute pre-show gets everyone settled with popcorn in hand by the time the movie starts.
